Random walk to innovation: Why productivity follows a power law

چکیده

In this paper we propose a mechanism generating endogenously the productivity of innovations. We assume that knowledge creation occurs as the innovator obtains new ideas from combinations of existing ideas. The productivity of an innovation is determined by an unobservable intrinsic component as well as by the productivity of the parent ideas and their parents, thus generating a network of spillovers. When the innovator has only local knowledge of the network, his optimal behavior is to ”walk randomly” through the network of ”citations”. The resulting distribution for the productivity of the innovations is shown to be a power law, at least asymptotically. The intuition behind the result is that the innovator focuses his efforts on strengthening local spilovers because he has no command on the other sources of productivity. When this process of innovation is embedded in a model a la Kortum (1997) balanced growth of output is generated.

Innovation flow through social networks: productivity distribution in France and Italy

From a detailed empirical analysis of the productivity of non financial firms across several countries and years we show that productivity follows a non-Gaussian distribution with ‘fat tails’ in the large productivity region which are well mimicked by power law behaviors. We discuss how these empirical findings can be linked to a mechanism of exchanges in a social network where firms improve th...

A PRELUDE TO THE THEORY OF RANDOM WALKS IN RANDOM ENVIRONMENTS

A random walk on a lattice is one of the most fundamental models in probability theory. When the random walk is inhomogenous and its inhomogeniety comes from an ergodic stationary process, the walk is called a random walk in a random environment (RWRE). The basic questions such as the law of large numbers (LLN), the central limit theorem (CLT), and the large deviation principle (LDP) are ...

Reliable Resource Search in Scale Free Peer-to-Peer Network

The resource distribution and peer links in P2P network have an obvious scale free character follows power law distribution. Using this inherent character of P2P network to design resource search strategy is great significant for improving the search efficiency and reducing the costs. We analyze the scale free character in P2P network, and propose the reliable random walk search algorithm which...

Asymptotics Outside the Central Region

Until now we have focused on “typical” outcomes for a random walk in the “central region” of the probability distribution, which contains all of its weight as the number of steps N tends to ∞. For any finite N , now matter how large, however, there is always some chance of finding the random walk outside the central region. Such “extreme events” are not controlled by the Central Limit Theorem, ...
